Web Development Glossary

Apache:

Most common web server used for web hosting online.

ASP:

Active Server Pages are server-side web pages hosted on Microsoft platform web servers.

Blogs:

Interactive message posting boards widely used in web 2.0 websites.

Browser:

Application used to display websites on your computer.  Common web browsers include Internet Explorer, Netscape, Firefox, Opera, Safari, and Lynx.

Bulletin Board:

Commonly called Forums, allows users to submit messages online for everyone to see categorized by different topics.

Cascading Style Sheets (CSS):

Responsible for making Font tags obsolete.  CSS files allow web developers to add styles such as font colors, background images, or container placement on a web page.

Content Management System (CMS):

Control panel accompanied with website offering ability to manage web pages by updating or deleting content contained on the web site.  Usually requires a database such as MySQL for storing web data.

Databases:

Applications that store and organize large amounts of data that can easily add or subtract entries.  See also MySQL and Oracle.

DHTML:

Dynamic HTML uses standard html tags, but allows data to be manipulated more like a client side web programming language.

Flash:

Macromedia software program used for creating movies, audio, animation, and interactive websites.

Forums:

Web application allowing users to post messages for everyone to see categorized by different topics.

HTML:

Hyper Text Markup Language is the original web programming language used for creating web pages.  It has gone through modifications since its first days, but remains the underlying structure of websites currently online even today.

Java:

Object-oriented programming language used for software applications and web applications.  Similar to C++ with special emphasis on advanced web programming.

Javascript:

Client-side web programming language used to manipulate HTML or PHP code, add dialog boxes, or verify data entered by users meets necessary qualifications.

MySQL:

Open source database freely used on the web today.  Commonly used along with Apache, PHP, and unix web servers.

.NET:

Microsoft server-side programming language used for interactive websites.

Oracle:

Advanced database similar to MySQL but more costly.

PHP:

Server-side web programming language commonly used for interactive web 2.0 websites.  Simplified language similar to Perl but runs faster and more efficiently.

PHPBB:

Bulletin Board template created with PHP web programming language that allows you to easily create your own web forum without needing to program any code.

PHPMyAdmin:

Database management tool created with PHP that performs MySQL commands with an easy-to-use user interface.

Visual Basic:

Microsoft programming language used with .NET as well as programs such as Microsoft Excel.  Also includes web scripting language similar to javascript.

XHTML:

Latest HTML structured web programming language combined with XML.  Modified tags require more precision, but remain almost identical.

XML:

Web programming language used for defining, sending, receiving data as well as interacting with databases.  Complex code similar to HTML, but used as an extension to html for dynamically driven web pages.

XSL:

Style sheet associated with XML files.  Similar to CSS but more complex.
